The Mahashivaratri Festival, a festival most Hindus look forward to every year, is aptly known as ‘The Night of Shiva’ celebrated with pomp and reverence. The most powerful deity of the Hindu trinity, ‘Shivaratri’ falls on the moonless 14th night of the new moon which occurs in the Hindu month of Falgun, working out to be calculative in the month of February-March according to the English Gregorian calendar. Devotees follow a strict regimen of day and night fast and perform ritual worship of the Shiva Lingam to pacify Lord Shiva.
According to Hindu mythology, Shivaratri or ‘Shiva’s Great Night’ symbolizes the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Parvati. There are also many who believe, Shivaratri is the night when Lord Shiva performed the ‘Tandava Nritya’ – the dance of primeval creation, preservation and destruction. Celebrating the festival as per habitual traditions, devotees enact a ritual bath to the Lingam with the panchagavya of: milk, sour milk, urine, butter and dung. The great occasion of Shivaratri primarily occurs at night. In Nepal, thousands of devotees of Lord Shiva throng Shiva temples across the country and thousands from across the borders in India visit this temple and spend ‘the Night of Lord Shiva’ by chanting verses and hymns in praise of the Lord. This festival holds a deep significance for the ladies. They pray to the Goddess Parvati also called ‘Gaura’, the giver of ‘Suhag’ for good husbands, marital bliss and a long and prosperous married life.
