The Mankamana Tour – Hoping for wishes to come true…
The sanskritic meaning of Mankamana is a breakdown translation of two words : “Mana” meaning ‘heart’ and “Kamana” is ‘to wish’. Recognized as a holy manifestation since the 17th century, the myth goes that the Goddess Bhagwati hears and grants wishes for all those who visit and revere her shrine to worship her. The temple is situated in Gorkha district and pertly placed on a unique ridge of 1302m above sea level, overlooking the Trisuli River in the south and Marsyangdi in the west with stunning views of Mt. Manaslu and the Annapurna ranges from the north of the temple. The temple is approximately a 104 Km drive through lush green countryside from Kathmandu and it can also be reached via bus east from Pokhara in around 3-4 hours.
The legend of Manakamana Goddess dates back to the reign of the Gorkha king Ram Shah during the 17th century. It is said that his queen possessed divine powers, which only her devotee Lakhan Thapa knew about. One day, the king witnessed his queen in the incarnation of a Goddess and her devotee in the form of a lion. Upon mentioning the revelation to his queen, the king mysteriously died. With this, customary periods of that time compelled the queen to ritually immolate herself through ‘Sati’’ on her husband’s funeral pyre. Before her sati the queen assured Lakhan Thapa that she would reappear sometime later. After several months a farmer while ploughing his fields cleaved a stone, and found a stream of blood and milk flow from the brick. When Lakhan heard about this event, he immediately performed Hindu tantric rituals at the site where the stone was found and this stopped the flow of blood and milk. This site laid the foundation of the present shrine. Till this day, tradition has dictated that the priest at the temple must be a descendent of Lakhan Thapa, the queen’s devotee.
